It’s Friday, which means we’ve almost made it through week 1 of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics, otherwise known as the one time every four years when we all pretend to understand what curling is. The Olympics may be decreasing in popularity, but there’s no denying that for two weeks every fourth February we all become decidedly patriotic. To help fuel my Olympic fervor this year I’ve been spending a lot of time on the CBC portal. The crew at CBC has outdone itself these Olympic games in every area except for figure skating (sorry Kurt Browning.) It’s not their fault, honestly, it’s just that the NBC commentating team of Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir (let’s give a proper nod to Terry Gannon also,) is so exceptional no other team can compare. They are equal parts entertaining, informed, fashionable and hilarious. The only thing that tops their on-camera compatibility is the backstage access they grant via their joint insta-feed.

Speaking of things that are awesome, when was the last time you were excited about a movie soundtrack? Probably never, but that’s because most movie soundtracks aren’t curated by the lyrical genius and god of all music, Kendrick Lamar. Every track of the Black Panther soundtrack is pure fire. Long live Wakanda.

It’s a long weekend, (Happy Family Day!) which means you may find yourself with some extra time to catch up on reading, podcasts and long-form. Consider adding the following to your list:

  • The Berlin Wall, which stood for 28 years, has now been torn down for longer than it stood. Germans have an understandably complex relationship with their history, but Berlin has proven an impressive example of how to acknowledge dark periods of the past. And, given that our neighbours are close to erecting another wall, it’s worth a moment to remember the effects of last century’s most famous one.
  • David Axelrod, architect of Obama’s 2008 campaign and former moustache-model, isn’t always the most compelling podcast host, but he is always impressively informed. This episode with Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, is some of his finer work.
  • The Ringer published this great piece on Tara Lipinski’s 2nd act, a character study in sport and hard work. Worth the read.
  • If you can’t get enough skating (who can blame you!) here’s a gem from 2010. The whole program is delightful, but for pure joy skip to the 1:45-min mark.

And, finally, happy Lunar New Year to all, and welcome to the year of the Dog!
